3 Signs That Dentures Might Be In Your Future

Dentures vs Dental Implants

Be aware of the signs that you might need dentures.

You might think dentures will never be an option for you, but they are more prevalent than you think.  According to The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, there will be around 38 million adults needing dentures by the year 2020.  However, if you practice exceptional oral health techniques and visit the dentist at least twice a year, you can avoid tooth loss.  There are a few warning signs you should be aware of that point to you needing dentures in the future.

Toothache

If a toothache is causing you severe and frequent pain, it is essential that you visit a dentist as soon as possible.  Persistent pain is a major sign that tooth decay has hit the nerve of the tooth. Once decay has hit the nerves and pulp of the tooth, it might have to be removed.  So, it is important to not avoid a toothache and see a dentist so that you can receive a filling rather than a missing tooth.

Swollen and Red Gums

Red, swollen, and tender gums are common symptoms of gingivitis, which is the early stage of gum disease.  If left untreated, gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease which leads to bone and tooth loss. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, gum disease is the cause of around 70 percent of tooth loss.  Once a tooth falls out or is removed, it is gone forever, and dentures are one of the only solutions. So, if you notice that your gums are swollen or bleeding, see a dentist immediately.

Loose and Shifting Teeth

You may notice that your teeth are shifting and you’re beginning to see a few gaps in between your teeth.  This is a sign of bone loss resulting from periodontal disease, which can affect people without them even knowing it.  If your teeth are loosening and shifting, extraction might be the only option.
