Although there aren’t any hard and fast dietary restrictions, there are drinks and foods to avoid with Invisalign. Because you go and remove the alignment trays for most drinking and eating, that typically does not play a role in overall treatment, however, what you drink and eat could cause other issues, and we will address that in this blog. Read on to learn more!
How to Protect Your Investment with Invisalign
Invisalign treatment is an investment. The whole treatment plan could cost thousands of dollars. With this in mind, even though there isn’t a long list of foods to avoid during your Invisalign treatment, there are a few items you should avoid or limit. First, general care instructions for Invisalign tray aligners:
- Keeping them clean – flossing and brushing after all beverages and meals.
- Avoid scratching them – use a supplied case to store your trays while you eat.
- Do not play with your tray liners – avoid exploring them with your tongue or moving them in and out.
- Always remove your trays to drink or eat anything other than water
- Brush before you reinsert aligners – and do not skip this step.
- Do not switch tray sets early, you cannot rush this treatment.
- Even though you could remove your tray aligners to drink and eat, there are a few foods and drinks to avoid with Invisalign.
Drinks and Foods to Avoid with Invisalign
While your aligners are out, you could still damage your teeth. Among drinks and foods that could cause damage, we recommend avoiding or at least limiting:
- Spicy food – these are usually paired with acidic food like tomatoes that could damage teeth.
- Extremely cold food – we all love ice cream, but frozen treats could cause sensitivity problems. Icy treats could also crack teeth if chewed.
- Coffee (including tea and other dark beverages) – these could stain your tray and teeth. Hot drinks could also cause your trays to soften and warp.
- Sodas (including non-sugar sodas) and fruit juice – these items will often contain acids and sugars, both of which could damage your teeth.
- Hard foods – since your teeth are in the process of shifting during treatment, hard foods might cause them to move around while chewing.
Practice these good oral hygiene and brush the floors before you re-insert your alignment trays.
